ON DESIGN
“the whole is greater than the sum of its parts” is my vision the design process. From initial concept to completion, a quality finish is the result of numerous trades cooperating to give concrete life to an initial abstract vision. Being deeply familiar with all stages of the process, I think about the construction, and even potentially future repairs from the start. I also think of the flow and use of a space, maximize the view, the light, and offer numerous practical storage solutions. From my work with yacht interiors, I have built a reputation of finding the space even where there seemed to be none, and optimizing it, while adhering to all safety standards. When a client has a specific collection or piece of furniture that they are looking to feature, I ensure that they are displayed elegantly and with respect to their quality and conservation.
ON ÆSTHETICS
There is no “Marc Gervait style” that can be found in my portfolio. What can be found in all my designs, however, is the quality of the finish, the harmony, and the returning clients. On every project, I strive to understand what the client’s taste is, and ensure that it appears throughout to give them a feeling of home, whether it be a very modern yacht or a traditional home featuring period furniture and private collections. When working with a company that has an existing stock, I start by familiarizing myself with it as quickly as possible since it will become the language in which I will translate the client’s style. If there is no existing stock, or if – as in these times – some stocks are limited, I am happy to design furniture or fabrics myself, as I have in the past, to obtain the desired result.
ON COMMUNICATION
Having lived in several countries, I have a knowledge of international contexts and cultural differences, and I have worked in design on various projects speaking French, English, German and some Italian. With the hands-on experience I have developed through the years, I understand every step of the construction process and I incorporate this knowledge in my design and timelines, this also allows me to interact at eye level with all craftspeople on the project. My studies in material science and engineering, along with my further learning throughout my career have provided me with a deep understanding of the work of engineers and architects, such that I can have informed and thorough design conversations with them. My initial focus on business and finance, and my work in different industries, through various economic cycles, has given me the context to discuss budget for a project and the financials of a company along with its directors. Finally, my education, sense of discretion, and public speaking skills have offered me the ability to interact with the most distinguished clients and their representatives. A clear, comprehensive rendering helps clarify communications with laypeople, and I have also found that on the spot hand sketching is a strong asset to truly understand each other’s vision. In every company, I have earned the respect of all, thanks to my professionalism, positive attitude and resourcefulness, and I have found that in every case, I have rapidly become the person that people turn to in order to solve problems.
